Truth
I think that truth is an important idea this story Grendel, because in this the truth differs from person to person. I can relate to how truth is used in this story to the real world because in the life people mostly identify the truth the story that is most widely accepted or form the source that the story came from. The truth can very from person to person and depending on the person's level of respect and trust one person's story may be accepted by more people than a person of little authority or respect. In Grendel the Shaper is a person of respect and trust and therefore the things he says is taken as true without a second thought of it being otherwise false. The Shaper tell stories of the origins of good and evil which cause everyone else to see Grendel as this evil creature without giving him a chance. To Grendel this did not seem to be truth he wasn't born with a drive just to be evil and kill, in fact when he saw how the humans interacted with each other and thought of it as horrible and evil. In this story the perceived truth is a very powerful concept and in my opinion can dictate the very nature of our being and effects everyone.

I dont believe that the truths differ from person to person in Grendel, but more so the Human/Sharper and Grendel. I liked your last sentence it was very powerful, Ive never considered looking at the truths of OUR being.
ReplyDeleteI think truths are often the ideas that are most agreeable with the person. Things that do not agree? Lies.
ReplyDeleteI agree that understanding and truth is derived from those above you, thus leading to the development of your own self. Mr. McCarthy is right, when the Shaper identified Grendel as an evil creature, Grendel did not accepted this idea as the truth because it was not agreeable with him.
